Romney’s ‘Mormon problem’: Republicans are more tolerant, Democrats less so

June 25, 2012

Los Angeles Times (California)

In a column last week, I argued that Mitt Romney’s “Mormon problem” is basically over now that he’s sewn up the Republican presidential nomination. Romney’s religion was a challenge for him in the Republican primary race, when many evangelical Protestants hesitated to support a Mormon; but now that we’re in the general election campaign, that isn’t likely to matter anymore.

After I wrote, a new Gallup poll was released with an intriguing finding: The percentage of Americans who say they would not vote for a Mormon is virtually unchanged since 1967 — 17% then, 18% now. That suggests that anti-Mormon feeling has been amazingly stable over half a century, a period during which voters’ reluctance to support candidates who were black, female or Jewish declined dramatically.

New Book Talks of Romney’s Faith, ‘Stunning Influence’ of ‘Mormon Machine’

June 25, 2012

US News and World Report

After tackling the faiths of George W. Bush and Barack Obama, conservative Evangelical writer Stephen Mansfield has moved on to a new subject: Mormonism.

Whispers obtained a preview copy of Mansfield’s “The Mormonizing of America,” out July 3, which refers to powerful Mormons like Glenn Beck, Harry Reid and yes, Mitt Romney, as part of the “Mormon Machine.”

Poll: Mormons excited about Romney

June 25, 2012

USA Today

Most Mormons in Utah believe that Mitt Romney’s rise to become the likely GOP presidential nominee is a good thing for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. But many do not trust the media to cover the church fairly, according to a new poll released Monday (June 25).

Gay Pride Weekend Draws Mormon Allies and Equality Supporters

June 25, 2012

Religion Dispatches

Tresa Edmunds, a straight LDS ally and mother, made a 3-hour drive into the city to march with her sign: “Gay kids grow up Mormon, I’m here to keep them safe.” As in Seattle, San Francisco marchers reported tearful parade-route meetings with gay Mormons estranged from the community.

In Chicago, a contingent of 15 LDS marchers, organized just days before the event by former LDS bishop Kevin Kloosterman, marched as “Mormon Allies” with signs reading “God is Love,” “Love thy Neighbor,” and “All are Alike Unto God.” Marcher Mayra Diaz, who carried a sign that declared her support for marriage equality, expressed amazement at the “thank yous” the Mormon Allies received from the crowd. “I was so moved by them thanking us,” Diaz said, “when we had made such mistakes and rejections. They taught us a great lesson on love and forgiveness.”

Changing the Mormon conversation on homosexuality

June 25, 2012

Washington Post

I am going to use heartfelt, strong language as I stress the importance of a new, groundbreaking publication that has — in my opinion — the ability to save lives. Its subject matter is far too important to be ignored or taken lightly, especially when we regularly read about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender young people and adults that leave the Mormon Church, never mind the senseless loss of many to suicide.

“Supportive Families, Healthy Children: Helping Latter-Day Saint Families with Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Children,” co-authored by Dr. Caitlin Ryan, Director of the family Acceptance Project (http://familyproject.sfsu.edu/) and Bob Rees, Ph.D, former Mormon Bishop, may well be the tool that gives LDS families what they need to accept their LGBT children.

Next time Mormons pay tithing, they may notice something new

June 25, 2012

Salt Lake Tribune (Utah)

The LDS Church has redesigned the slips members use to pay tithing and other donations, eliminating several of the line items.

Until recently, church members could check a box in front of the Perpetual Education Fund (which helps Mormon students in less-developed nations), the Book of Mormon (to pay for publication of the Utah-based faith’s signature scripture), or temple construction in addition to tithing, fast offerings (for the poor), general and ward missionary funds and humanitarian aid.

The current form now has spaces only for tithing, fast offering, humanitarian aid and general and ward missionary fund. The education, temple and scripture funds have been removed.

Romney Mobilizes His ‘Mormon Army’

June 25, 2012

Utah Policy

Mitt Romney’s campaign is mobilizing Utah Mormon Republicans and sending them to battleground states to help in the 2012 election.

The Financial Times looks at how Romney’s campaign hopes to use Utah members of the LDS Church to counter Barack Obama’s network of supporters in key states.

Karger Looks to Make a Statement with Showing in Tomorrow’s Final Primary

June 25, 2012

Uncovered Politics

Utah’s primary will be notable as gay activist Fred Karger’s final stand, a fitting final chapter for a campaign that’s attracted more media attention than actual votes. A sharp critic of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Karger has delighted in mocking and harshly criticizing Mormons throughout his campaign. The campaign is aiming to make a statement by registering at least a minimal showing tomorrow night.
