Mormon FAIR-Cast 97: FAIR on the Radio Pt 1

July 11, 2012

FAIR Blog

FAIR Board Chairman John Lynch and FAIR Member Stephen Smoot appeared on K-Talk radio, in Salt Lake City, Utah to discuss the mission of FAIR, its history and to take questions from callers. Some of the issues addressed were:

What are the core beliefs one must maintain in order to be considered an “orthodox” Mormon?

What is the distinction between knowledge and belief?

Why are there different versions of Joseph Smith’s first vision?

If Mitt Romney is elected President, will he be required to adopt the political positions of the Church?

Is the Church a racist or sexist organization?

John and Stephen also discussed the 2012 FAIR Conference that is being held in Utah on August 2 and 3 in Sandy, Utah.

Choose Jesus, But Don’t Vote for Him

July 11, 2012

Christian Post

There is a great deal of confusion about Mormons. There appear to be two groups – the isolationist group in Utah that has followed Warren Jeffs, and the mainstream group that has integrated into American society that appears to be a series of oligarchies. Isolationist group is totalitarian. Mainstream is oligarchy. The organization and design of the isolationist and of the mainstream are entirely opposite each other.

Now, I have been reading through the Book of Mormon, which is the ultimate canon within Mormonism. Any writing from a Mormon that contradicts this book is a Mormon apostasy. The central premise is that shortly before the Babylonian captivity, a Hebrew named Lehi took his family, and they fled from Jerusalem to escape the Babylonians. Lehi had four sons, the two most important being Laman and Nephi. Laman consistently rebelled and attempted to kill his family. Nephi consistently held down the rebellion. During their time in the wilderness, Lehi had two more sons who he named Jacob and Joseph in honor of their heritage. The family migrates to North America where they await the Messiah Jesus and where the Lamanites consistently war against the Nephites.

Here are some bits that I found interesting.

Glenn Beck: Electing A Mormon President Would Be ‘Just As Historic’ As Electing First Black President

July 11, 2012

Mediaite

Today on his radio show, Glenn Beck and crew read through Spike Lee’s recent interview in Vulture and was inspired by the part where Lee compared people not liking a black president to those not wanting to vote for a Mormon. Beck made a comparison of his own, arguing that electing America’s first Mormon president would be “just as historic” as when we elected our first black president in 2008.

Mormonism and the cult of name-calling

July 11, 2012

Washington Post

There is much debate on whether Joseph Smith–the man who founded the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, often known as the Mormon Church–was truly a prophet called of God, but one of his prophecies has undoubtedly come to pass. According to Smith, an angel visited him in the autumn of 1823, telling him that his name “should be had for good and evil among all nations, kindreds, and tongues, or that it should be both good and evil spoken of among all people.”

As Mitt Romney has taken the national stage as the presumptive presidential nominee of the Republican Party this year, his Mormon faith has garnered unprecedented interest. The resulting discussion has borne out the truth of Moroni’s prophesy, as genuine admiration and bitter criticism have been leveled not only at the prophet, but at the church he founded nearly 200 years ago. Animating this discussion is a basic question that often goes unstated: Are Mormons normal enough to belong in mainstream America? Normal enough that one of them could be trusted to be president?

‘Bachelorette’ Emily Maynard Should Run for Her Life if Jef Is Really Mormon

July 11, 2012

The Stir

Mormons who were watching The Bachelorette the other night heard something that sounded awfully familiar: Jef Holm telling Emily Maynard, “There’s a time and place for everything, and right now is a time for us to bridle these passions.” OH MY HECK. Jef totally quoted the Book of Mormon! (The actual Mormon scripture, not the musical.) It’s right there in Alma 38:12, “… and also see that ye bridle all your passions, that ye may be filled with love …”

Is he …? Could he be …? MORMON?

Yup, Jef’s a Mormon. Ah-hah! That’s why he’s so cute in that clean-cut way. In an interview he revealed that he was raised in a devoutly faithful Mormon family. He’s not exactly practicing the religion of his upbringing at the moment, though. And that’s probably a good thing for Emily. Being a mixed-faith family in the Mormon religion is awfully tricky!
