Utah lawmakers heed Mormon church, keep Zion Curtain

March 12, 2014

Salt Lake Tribune (Utah)

The “Zion Curtain” at bars within Utah restaurants will remain, despite renewed attempts to tear it down that had gained more ground this year than many expected.

Because of opposition in the Senate, Rep. Kraig Powell, R-Heber City, has abandoned his HB285. It would have removed the 7-foot-2-inch opaque barrier that newer restaurants must have in bar areas so children can’t see alcoholic beverages being mixed or poured.

The New York Times, Mormon women and Doug Fabrizio

March 12, 2014

The Daily Herald

Over the past few years, the roles of women in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have consistently been called into the spotlight.

Though many women claim satisfaction with the workings of the faith, a select group of women have made it clear they desire more. The group, dubbed Ordain Women, desire what they feel would be true equality in the faith through ordination to the priesthood and more authoritative positions in the church, and, according to an investigative article produced by the New York Times, they are not alone.

The article, “From Mormon Women, a Flood of Requests and Questions on Their Role in the Church,” ran in the nationally published paper March 6 and contained input from a variety of women from across the country on their experiences and desires within the faith.

Utah polygamous family says going on TV liberating

March 12, 2014

The commercial appeal (Utah)

The newest polygamous Utah family featured in a reality TV show says sharing their story with a wide audience has been liberating.

Brady Williams and his five wives were a bit apprehensive ahead of the airing of a pilot episode in September, but they said this week that it felt liberating to be open about who they are and what they believe.

“It really is like coming out of the closet,” said Brady Williams, 43. “It’s very liberating. You don’t worry if somebody thinks you’re a polygamist anymore because everyone knows.”
